Spread the hermit crab or other sand out over the pan. Make as thin a layer as you possibly can. Then spray a good amount of Scotchgard over the sand. You want to completely saturate the sand but do not allow any of the chemical to pool.
The polymers that we need for our kinetic sand are found in dish soap. Mix together the sand and corn starch until the two are fully integrated. You can mix the two with your measuring spoon to save dishes. Set the sand and cornstarch mixture aside. There are tons of other ways to make kinetic sand in addition to what's shown here—so feel free to try out other methods if you want.

There are many methods of making molds. The probability will be to do it in sections for such a large size. Take the sand out of the water when you are done playing with it. You can do this using your hands, a spoon, or even a cup. If you used multiple colors, consider using a spoon to scoop individual colors out. You might still get a few specks of other colors, but it is still a good way to preserve the original color.
To store your kinetic sand, keep it in an airtight container for up to 3 months. First, in a large container, mix the two dry ingredients, that is, the sand and cornstarch , and then add first the water and then a few drops of tea tree oil. Mix everything together well until you get the consistency of magic sand. If necessary, add more water or cornstarch, depending on whether the sand is too dry or too wet.

The sand should easily absorb all of the protector. You’re going to need some sand and some Scotchgard protector. The finer the sand particles are, the better it will work. I recommend getting some hermit crab sand from your local pet store.
Ask more questions to get your child engaged in sensory play, which moon sand is notoriously great for. If you want to make different colors, divide the flour up into separate bowls. How many bowls you use will depend on how many colors you want. You can use toys for the magic sand that you would use on the beach – a small rake, molds and a shovel, for example. You can also have cookie cutters ready for your children. Spatulas or non-hazardous and dull plastic knives, in turn, are perfect for cutting up the sand (only under supervision!).
Step 8: Test the Magic Sand
This kinetic sand recipe uses just 3 ingredients to make a soft, moldable sand that provides hours of sensory play time. Feel free to substitute flour if you don't have cornstarch. We used canola oil but you can also use olive oil, mineral oil, or baby oil. You will need to add food coloring if you are not starting with colored sand. In itself, modeling sand has a soft, airy texture that is quite easy to shape. Like normal natural sand, then, or is it?

It will take about 30 to 60 minutes for it to do so. It may take longer, however, if you have a lot of sand and it's a damp day. Store it in the fridge after you’ve made it, and try to use it up within a week or two after brewing. Coat the sand once again, exactly as in the previous step. Now stop and wait 15 to 20 minutes for the protector to dry completely. Be sure to acquire Scotchgard protector. The cans look identical, one says cleaner, one says protector.

Mix in a few teaspoons of glitter to the sand make it sparkly. Pour 3 cups of corn starch into the water. Stir thoroughly to remove any lumps that are tempted to form. Mix together the soap and water with the measuring spoon until bubbles appear on the surface.
